Fourth-semester nursing students Alyssa Boyle, Paige Brinkerhoff, Shalyn Henstra and Katie Merrell have been accepted into the Veterans Affairs Student Trainee Experience Program, or VA-STEP. This is a competitive opportunity, providing a year of paid clinical training to Bachelor of Science in Nursing students; it also fulfils the BYU College of Nursing capstone requirement for graduation. These students applied for limited and highly sought-after places in the program, and all four of them were accepted. Paige is excited to be part of the VA-STEP: “I feel like not a lot of people know what it actually entails and how cool it is.” According to these students, these “cool” aspects include flexible work arrangements, excellent mentoring, and meaningful service.

On Friday, April 24, BYU College of Nursing held its convocation ceremony in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium, honoring 132 graduates—118 receiving Bachelor of Science degrees and 14 earning master’s degrees. The ceremony celebrated the graduates’ dedication, perseverance, and academic achievement.

BYU Nursing students Catherine Wendel and Grace Edwards stood in front of nursing professionals from across the country at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) annual conference in October 2025. They presented on the implementation of a multi-patient, team psychiatric simulation for undergraduate students here at BYU College of Nursing.

It goes without saying that BYU College of Nursing requires a major commitment. Students devote themselves to three years of time in class, scheduling clinical hours, and research/community projects, to say nothing of the untold hours studying. There’s a reason why many students describe the experience as wonderfully stretching.

Adjunct Professor Jane Fox is a career nurse with 49 years of nursing experience under her belt. Reflecting on her 8 years of teaching at BYU, Adjunct Professor Jane Fox says, “this is one of the funnest jobs I have ever had.”

Many people understand that hair loss is a common side effect of chemotherapy. However, it is a lesser-known fact that chemotherapy also causes neuropathy, a condition that makes areas of the body (like the scalp) very sensitive. As such, many chemo patients forgo wearing traditional wigs as they irritate delicate scalps.

On February 24, second-year family nurse practitioner (FNP) students gathered to present their research theses, but there was a catch—they only had three minutes to do it.

On February 2 and 9, BYU nursing students participated in the annual poverty simulation. The simulation is designed to help students better understand the challenges and compounding stressors that people in poverty experience.
