Originally from Pennsylvania, Shane’s time in Provo has been as busy as it has been successful. After serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea and getting married, he began his first semester in the College of Nursing. Since then, he and his wife have expanded the family with one baby daughter and two pugs!
In Shane’s words, he chose to pursue nursing because it was simply “the best fit for his values.” What most drew his attention was the pure, unhindered chance he'd have to serve people day in and day out. He also mentioned that a flexible schedule, variety of work opportunities, and the chance to be on his feet were all ideal.
“Nursing is something where you can truly be genuine about helping people,” he stated. “It’s an attractive thing to go home every day knowing that you did your best to improve the world and heal people.”
When asked about his experiences at BYU College of Nursing, Shane had one word to describe it: “sleepless.” However, long clinical hours and time studying for exams was a worthy price to pay to learn the Healer’s Art, an element of his studies that gave Shane profound, even sacred experiences.

He reflected on one experience caring for a man in the ER. The man would soon pass away, and he had no family or friends to comfort him. So, Shane was directed to sit with him so he wouldn’t feel so alone. Shane articulated how he felt during that experience, saying “It’s the kind of thing that gives you a new perspective on life.”
Shane hit the ground running immediately after leaving nursing school. He’s already been offered several jobs and has selected one in North Carolina, where he’ll be working in his ideal setting: a cardiovascular ICU. With his growing family and a burgeoning career, Shane is on course to make his mark in his community and with each patient he serves.
Good luck, Shane!
