On October 29th, BYU College of Nursing students and staff came together to celebrate the Day of the Dead, a Latin American holiday celebrating family connections and loved ones who have passed away. Attendees gathered in the Kimball Tower to share a meal and pay homage to deceased family members of faculty and students. The event featured an “ofrenda,” or traditional altar set up with photos of loved ones, food, candles, and other significant objects. This ofrenda was created digitally, featuring pictures of family projected onto the wall.
The event proved to be a great way to unite nursing students while giving them a culturally unique experience. Dr. Corinna Trujillo Tanner, who facilitated the activity, emphasized the value of culture and heritage when it comes to forming relationships with others. “We want to create a spirit of belonging at the College of Nursing, and connecting our unique heritages is a great way to do that,” she said enthusiastically.
Activities like these are very beneficial for students as they progress in the program. Bryce Lewis, a third-semester nursing student and member of the Spanish for Nurses Club, remarked on the value of social activities: “Sometimes we’re so compartmentalized in our cohorts, it’s nice to have these group activities.”
BYU College of Nursing has many upcoming events aimed at helping students elevate their nursing education experience and become more capable. See the full College of Nursing events schedule here.
