The BYU College of Nursing is pleased to announce that Dr. Shelly Reed has been selected to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (Academy). Induction into the Academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career in which their accomplishments are honored by their colleagues within and outside the profession. Fellows are selected based on their contributions and impact to advance the public’s health. Dr. Reed was selected from a large pool of applicants from around the world.
Dr. Reed has been teaching at BYU since 2005 and has been a nurse since 1982 (42 years). Her specialties are maternal child health, global health, and simulation. “I feel recognized for the contributions I have made to nursing,” says Dr. Reed. “I am very flattered to be sponsored by colleagues, Julie Valentine and Leslie Miles. I greatly respect all that they have accomplished and am honored that they think I am worthy of the Academy award.”
One of her contributions to the nursing profession is a scale Dr. Reed created that is used to evaluate the nursing student debriefing experience. This tool has been translated into six languages and has been used in over 20 countries to evaluate simulation debriefing. Dr. Reed has also researched the cultural meanings of childbirth and newborn health in Tonga and Ecuador. She has also volunteered as a health care team member in Ecuador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, and Honduras. “I love childbirth and hope to share that love and excitement with my students and others in the classroom, in clinical, and through presentations at conferences,” shared Dr. Reed.
The Academy is a policy organization and an honorific society that recognizes nursing's most accomplished leaders. Fellows contribute their collective expertise to the Academy, engaging with health leaders nationally and globally to improve health and achieve health equity by impacting policy through nursing leadership, innovation, and science.
