At BYU College of Nursing, our mission is “to learn the Healer’s art and go forth to serve.” The capitalized “H” in Healer is intentional, referring to Jesus Christ, who “walked the roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead.”1 Notably, He met individuals where they were, as they were, and addressed their specific needs.
As a college, including faculty, students, and alumni, we strive to emulate His example. BYU College of Nursing welcomes the recently announced medical school at BYU. We look forward to collaboration and interdisciplinary learning by study and by faith. Together, we can learn from and serve individuals, families, and communities, both large and small, in Utah and around the world.
For instance, a faculty member who oversees the India section of our Global and Population Health Nursing Clinical Practicum shared this touching experience:
“Today we spent time in the leprosy colony. No plans, no teaching, just holding the hands of people who no one wants to touch. We sang songs . . . there were tears pouring down the faces of the students. It was one of the most beautiful experiences.”
The articles in this publication will provide further examples of learning the Healer’s art. I hope they will inspire you to go forth to serve in your own unique way.
