Calvin Reed fell in love with emergency medicine and emergency preparedness after volunteering as an EMT. His time in BYU College of Nursing gave him opportunities to expound on his passion through orchestrating multiple Mass Casualty Drills, research, etc. As a recent graduate from the program, he is excited to continue and grow a career based in emergency nursing.
Besides emergency preparedness, Calvin had several extra opportunities to engage in nursing. While working in his clinical rotations, he connected with nurses and appreciated the tricks of the trade they imparted to him. He also took part in the Czech Global Population Health Nursing Clinical Practicum in 2024 where he enjoyed meeting international nursing students and sharing about the differences in their nursing education.
Calvin was initially uncertain how he would incorporate spiritual learning into his studies. “Being a convert and someone who wasn’t as tapped into spirituality as much as others, I didn’t know how I would connect with Heavenly Father over these ideas,” stated Calvin. He found strength when focusing on treating his patients with Christlike compassion. “To be honest, it comes naturally to those who genuinely care about the well-being of their patients no matter their economic status or background. If we give our all to everybody, Heavenly Father will back us up and allow us to perform work and love and help others in need.”

In the short-term, Calvin will be starting at the Lexington Medical Center in South Carolina in their nurse residency program and will be transitioning into their Emergency Department. He then hopes to get multiple certifications to advance his knowledge in emergency medicine. He also hopes to focus on improving Mass Casualty Response training and protocols.
Good luck to Calvin!
