Dr. Marie Prothero has been appointed to the board of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). She joins two other board members and will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2025. Specifically, Dr. Prothero will be chairing the AONL Competency Committee. This committee will provide the framework for the knowledge, skills and abilities associated with effective leadership — from first time leaders to experienced executives.
This appointment comes after years of dedicated service to AONL and time spent as a faculty member for BYU College of Nursing. Dr. Prothero was a member of AONL from 1999-2007 and returned in 2018. She served on the organization’s publication committee from 2019-2022. In addition to service in AONL, Dr. Prothero has been involved in the Utah Organization of Nurse Leaders, United Way of Utah County, and the Revere Health Board.
“This is a lifelong dream to work alongside other nurse leaders at a national level,” said Dr. Prothero. “I also have the unique opportunity to represent academia on the board and bring my perspective of educating future nurses and nurse leaders.”
In her new position on the AONL board, she will work with nurse leaders nationwide to focus on and establish leadership competencies at all levels of the organization: from nurse managers all the way to nurse executives. This could take various forms like hosting training sessions and heading conferences to teach about these skills. Dr. Prothero also looks forward to implementing AONL’s strategic plan that focuses on workforce strategies, improving health through advocacy, and advancing nursing leadership.
