Kristen Erekson Receives the DAISY Extraordinary Faculty Award
BYU College of Nursing maintains an ongoing collaboration with The DAISY Foundation in acknowledging nursing educators and students who demonstrate exceptional compassion. The DAISY Foundation originated from the Barnes family's desire to commemorate the life of Patrick Barnes, who tragically passed away at just 33 years of age from complications of an autoimmune disease. To honor him, their family established DAISY, an acronym representing "Diseases Attacking the Immune System," as a means to express their gratitude to the nurses who provided care to Patrick and to honor outstanding nurses worldwide.

Introducing Gina Jackson, one of the NLC’s MVPs
Meet the College of Nursing’s Simulation Operations Manager, Gina Jackson. Even if you don’t already know Gina, you likely know her sister Associate Teaching Professor Dr. Stacie Hunsaker. While Stacie pursued a career in nursing, Gina pursued finance. After graduating from Utah State University with her bachelor's degree, she spent eight years working in finance and the next ten raising her four children. Then, after working for Alpine School District for 14 years, Gina returned to school for her MPA. “I didn’t think I’d love going back to school as much as I did,” she said. “I loved it. It changed my life in so many ways.”

Faculty Spotlight: Kristen Erekson
Newly-hired Assistant Teaching Professor Kristen Erekson had been around the healthcare industry her whole life. Her dad was in healthcare administration, and Ms. Erekson recalls spending time in his clinic stealing Dum-Dum suckers and becoming familiar with that environment. Additionally, her paternal grandfather was a veterinarian. She was also inspired by her aunt Tatha, who was a neonatal nurse. When she was 13, Ms. Erekson wrote a time capsule that said, “This is my plan for the future: go to high school, graduate from Ballard High School, go to Rick’s college for two years, then BYU. I plan to serve a mission when I’m 21. I'd like to be an intensive care neonatal nurse, but I'm not sure.”

A Boy Named Russell
The connections made between nurses and patients in a hospital can have an impact that lasts for years. In January of 2008, a young boy named Russell was rushed to the emergency department of Utah Valley Hospital after a sledding accident in Provo Rock Canyon. Unfortunately, despite the efforts made by the doctors and nurses, the young boy passed away. A few days after the death of her child, Russell's mother sent the ED a note expressing her gratitude for their work and her faith that Heavenly Father had a plan for her entire family, including Russell.

Be a Ray of Sunshine for Others
If you have spent any time around the College of Nursing, you can likely recognize the smiling face of associate teaching professor Gaye C. Ray (AS '81, BS '82). Ray has been a professor at the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University for eight years and, in that time, solidified her reputation of being a perfect representation of her last name: a shining ray of sunshine for all she comes in contact with. The question remains, however, how does Ray maintain such a positive and cheerful attitude every day?

Caring for His Children
"I'm not very exciting," claims associate teaching professor Dr. Peggy H. Anderson (AS '83, BS '99, MS '01). "I'm just kind of a normal person that comes in and gets her work done." But anyone that knows about her dedication, her compassion, and her love of service knows there's much more to her than that.
